Biomass-Ash-Derived Materials for Sustainable Packaging

Founder & CEO at VASCH Ltd.

Kingston, Canada

About

VASCH is developing a biomass-ash-derived material platform that converts underutilized biomass ash into higher-value, lower-impact materials. The initial application is a moldable material that can be formed into sheets and simple molded structures, with a primary focus on non-food packaging for cleaning products and potentially cosmetics and personal-care products.

The project aims to advance the material from laboratory development toward a reproducible MVP and feasibility-scale manufacturing. Current R&D in Canada focuses on biomass ash characterization, material formulation, processing, molding and performance evaluation through collaborations with applied research organizations including Loyalist College and Carleton University. Additional pilot-scale capabilities and partnerships are being explored.

VASCH is seeking European partners to help accelerate the transition from laboratory material development toward manufacturable and commercially relevant applications. We are particularly interested in packaging manufacturers, material companies, advanced manufacturing organizations, consumer-product or packaging companies, and other industrial partners with capabilities in:

• material evaluation and application development;

• manufacturing process development and scale-up;

• compression molding, injection molding or other relevant forming processes;

• prototyping and feasibility trials;

• evaluation of packaging requirements and manufacturability;

• pilot-scale manufacturing and process validation; and

• potential future commercialization or manufacturing partnerships.

An important part of the project is understanding how the material can be integrated into existing or adapted manufacturing processes. We are therefore looking for partners who can provide practical industry input on material specifications, processing conditions, equipment requirements, product design and scale-up, as well as opportunities to test the material in relevant manufacturing environments.

The immediate project objectives are to:

• develop a reproducible biomass-ash-derived material formulation and processing approach;

• demonstrate repeatable molding into sheets and/or simple structures;

• establish basic material and application performance;

• determine manufacturing and scale-up requirements;

• conduct feasibility and pilot trials with appropriate European partners;

• evaluate potential non-food packaging applications; and

• establish a pathway toward future commercial manufacturing and market adoption.

VASCH is also interested in developing a localized circular model in Europe. Biomass ash is generated in significant quantities by biomass power and combined heat and power facilities, creating an opportunity to explore local feedstock partnerships rather than transporting ash from Canada. In the longer term, VASCH would like to investigate a model in which suitable biomass ash is sourced locally, converted into higher-value materials locally, and supplied to local manufacturing and consumer markets.

While non-food packaging is the immediate commercialization focus, the underlying material platform has longer-term potential in other molded and engineered applications, including engineered panels, architectural facades and potentially insulation-related materials.

VASCH is open to different forms of project cooperation, including joint development, material evaluation, feasibility trials, prototyping, pilot manufacturing, manufacturing partnerships and future commercialization arrangements. We are particularly interested in partners who can contribute industrial manufacturing expertise, processing infrastructure, application knowledge, feedstock relationships or access to European markets.
