About
The Johanniter are among the world’s leading humanitarian organizations and can look back on a long and rich tradition. As early as 1099, the Order of St. John founded a hospital in Jerusalem to care for poor and sick pilgrims. The Johanniter’s guiding principle of helping the sick out of compassion remains a central concern to this day. Their methods and approaches are always aligned with the latest medical and technological standards.
Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe in Austria is a comparatively young organization. It was founded in 1974 as a classic emergency rescue organization. At that time, the Johanniter started in Vienna with a single patient transport vehicle—an inaugural gift from the German Johanniter—and a handful of dedicated volunteers. Today, the Johanniter are active in various social sectors in Vienna, Tyrol, Carinthia, and Lower Austria, offering a broad spectrum of support services.
These include medical assistance, social support, care and nursing services, as well as education and training in nursing and first aid. Research and development of support services for healthy aging are also among our tasks, as are international and disaster relief efforts and missing-person searches with our search-and-rescue dog units. We provide both immediate assistance in emergency situations and long-term support, drawing on a broad base of volunteer helpers.
