Intelligent control of traffic light intersections

In some cities (like Žilina), there exists a system of intersection lights management to enable public transport vehicles to keep their timetable (green light might be a bit longer in the desired direction). This could be analysed, developed, and improved for the use of rescuers (e.g., deployment of fire and rescue vehicles, while the station is located in the city centre - maybe next to the main intersection). The final result should be the system integrating sensors in the roads, on-board units, and an operational system providing preferential traffic light control to provide a "green wave" in the desired direction within the whole city. Not only for the responders, but also to enable stuck cars to move and to create an emergency line.
