Nido is an R&D startup in the construction biotech space, founded by Loretxu García, a serial entrepreneur with over 20 years in construction, alongside CFO Miguel (MBA Columbia University) and chief scientist Karina Gómez, scientist and expert in carbon bonds. Nido has created a hydrogel panel made from alginate-based spheres and water, a fully biogenic and circular material with an upstream value chain rooted in algae biomass and a downstream end-of-life pathway that converts it into biochar or co-products for industry, making it a true cradle-to-cradle solution. This carbon-negative biomaterial matches the technical performance and price of conventional mineral and cement-based materials, displacing them in structural applications such as CLT timber floors, while simultaneously providing acoustic mass, thermal inertia, and fire resistance. Nido's roadmap includes a next-generation product called Nido Heat, which incorporates living microorganisms into the Nido hydrogel panel, capable of passively regulating building temperature without energy consumption, with the ambition of becoming the "bio-Tesla" of the construction industry.
Serial entrepreneur and inventor with over 20 years of experience in the construction industry. Passionate about driving innovation in timber construction. Currently leading NIDO Contech, developing alginate-based hydrogel panels from marine biomass that provide thermal inertia, fire resistance and acoustic mass to timber structures. Speaker and Mentor for Women Entrepreneurs in STEM.
