Circular Economy Platform of the Municipality of Nea Smyrni

The central objective of the project is the development and use of digital technologies, through the creation and rollout of an electronic platform for the reuse of items, in order to achieve more efficient resource management and to reduce environmental impacts.

The electronic platform will be developed on the premise that citizens exchange old items with one another — such as electronic and household appliances, toys, clothes, books, etc. — with the Municipality of Nea Smyrni acting as the intermediary. To facilitate these exchanges, the platform will use “exchange points,” which will serve as its alternative currency. More specifically, the value of the items offered by the platform user will be assessed on the basis of a points-estimation methodology that will be developed. The user will then be credited with the points corresponding to the value of the items they offered, which they will use to “purchase” other items made available through the platform.

An integral part of the implementation of this electronic Platform and of its operation is the procurement of specialized equipment so that items intended for distribution can be collected and presented effectively. In addition, the Municipality of Nea Smyrni will need to allocate an adequate number of personnel as well as a suitable space to house the Municipality's Circular Economy Platform.
