CIRCULAR GLASS FIBRE — High-Value Recycling of Construction Glass Waste into Glass Fibre Products

Oleksandr Lakei

Project manager at Berezan Float Glass Project at Berezan Float Glass Plant

Kyiv, Ukraine

About

We are an industrial partner from Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, developing a RIVCircular Topic 1 project focused on the high-value recycling of post-consumer construction glass.

The project aims to demonstrate an integrated industrial process for converting end-of-life insulating glass units (IGUs), dismantled windows, façade/flat glass and relevant glass-processing residues into high-quality secondary raw material suitable for glass melting and glass fibre production.

Proposed process:

Construction glass waste / end-of-life IGUs → dismantling → crushing → advanced separation and purification → contaminant removal → cullet characterisation and quality control → recycled glass batch optimisation → melting → glass fibre production.

The industrial demonstration site will be located in Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine.

We are looking for an R&D / Technology Partner with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

• construction and demolition glass recycling;
• flat-glass and IGU recycling;
• advanced glass sorting and separation;
• sensor-based or optical sorting technologies;
• removal of metals, ceramics, polymers, sealants and other contaminants from glass cullet;
• physical and chemical characterisation of recycled glass;
• secondary raw material quality control;
• glass batch formulation with high recycled content;
• glass melting optimisation;
• glass fibre production or fibre-forming processes;
• LCA and environmental validation of high-value glass recycling.

Expected role of the partner

The partner will participate in the development and demonstration of the recycling process, characterisation of incoming glass waste, definition of cullet quality specifications, optimisation of separation and purification, technological trials, process validation and progression of the integrated solution from TRL 6 towards TRL 8.

We are particularly interested in partners capable of combining R&D expertise with pilot-scale testing facilities.

Industrial objective

The project seeks to maximise the technically and economically feasible recycled-glass content in glass fibre production while maintaining stable melting, fibre-forming performance and final product quality.

The solution should demonstrate a scalable European closed-loop model:

demolished windows → secondary glass raw material → high-value glass fibre product.

Partner regions of interest: Vienna, Madrid, Hauts-de-France, Innlandet, Extremadura and Greece.
