Utilization of wastes in building materials

Maria Stefanidou

Professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, Greece

About

In the case of contemporary structures, sustainable, green concrete and mortars have been developed by substituting Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and aggregates, through the exploitation of:

-          industrial by-products: High Calcium Fly Ash (resulting from lignite-fired power plants), Ladle Furnace and Electric Arc Furnace slags (coming from the steel making industry), red mud (deriving from the digestion of bauxite during the production of alumina), perlite industrial by-products

-          recycled and waste materials: demolition and construction waste, concrete sludge, ceramic waste, marble waste, plastics, tires, glass

-          fibers: glass, polypropylene, carbon, nanofibers, bio-fibres from agricultural wastes

-          nanoparticles: nano-alumina, nano-silica, nano-calcium, nanoclay

-          Other additives: superplasticizers, flame retardants, aerogel, phase change materials (PCMs), starch
