About

ZeroPlate is a circular-energy project concept being developed for RIVCircular Topic 2 – Circular Energy Integration. It aims to establish an integrated system for collecting and valorising food waste generated by hotels, restaurants, cafés and other HORECA businesses.

The collected organic waste will be processed through anaerobic digestion to produce biogas, which may be upgraded to biomethane or used locally for renewable heat and energy. The remaining digestate will be evaluated for conversion into biofertiliser, supporting nutrient recovery and reducing waste disposal.

The project will combine smart waste collection, digital monitoring and traceability, technological demonstration, life-cycle assessment, life-cycle costing, socioeconomic impact evaluation and circular business-model development. It will assess the environmental and economic benefits for municipalities, local businesses, waste operators and energy users.

The initial partnership includes the University of Piraeus, NTUA and Kalamata as a pilot city. ZeroPlate is seeking complementary partners from eligible RIVCircular territories, particularly technology providers, SMEs, waste-management organisations, HORECA representatives, municipalities, pilot sites and replication territories.
