About

SMART CIRCULAR-TWIN is a disruptive innovation project (TRL 6 to TRL 8) designed to transform urban environment management under the paradigm of the circular economy and environmental resilience. The project develops a highly efficient, vehicle-based mobile mapping system (Mobile Mapping System) that breaks away from the traditional state of the art by replacing expensive laser systems with a synergistic combination of kinematic videogrammetry, high-precision GNSS positioning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate the digitization and inventorying of a city's critical infrastructure.

Through advanced computer vision algorithms, the system captures and processes the environment in real time to generate a multifunctional Digital Twin. This intelligent three-dimensional model enables the integrated optimization of the following urban vectors under a life-cycle approach:

  • Supply Networks and Connectivity (Water, Electricity, Telecommunications): Automated identification of surface anomalies, wear, and tear on critical assets (utility poles, wiring, manholes, substations). This maximizes the lifespan of components, reduces operational resource losses (water leaks, energy inefficiencies), and promotes the co-utilization of telecommunications infrastructure, thereby minimizing the consumption of raw materials.

  • Pollution Mitigation and Traffic Management: Analysis of urban morphology and pavement inventorying to correlate vehicle flow with pollution hotspots, enabling municipalities to optimize traffic and design strategies that drastically reduce environmental emissions.

  • Resilience and Emergency Management: Continuous assessment of evacuation routes, urban accessibility, and hydraulic infrastructure (such as drainage and sewage systems) to prevent natural disasters or structural collapses. This avoids the severe environmental impact and massive generation of demolition waste that reconstruction efforts typically entail.

Developed by an interregional consortium of technology providers, research centers, and urban utility operators, SMART CIRCULAR-TWIN will validate its technology in a real operational environment, equipping public administrations with a key tool for ecological decision-making and Green Public Procurement (GPP).
