NeoStock – Local bio-CO₂ storage near biomethane or biomass processing plants

President at EOSYS

About

NeoStock is an early-stage bio-CO₂ storage project developed in Lorraine with GRDF, Carbon Impact and Université de Lorraine. The project addresses a practical issue faced by biomethane and methanisation operators: how to manage and store relatively small, distributed quantities of biogenic CO₂ without relying on large-scale, long-distance CO₂ transport infrastructure.

The concept is to identify, qualify and test local or near-local geological storage solutions close to methanisation units. Instead of concentrating only on major industrial CO₂ hubs, NeoStock explores a distributed model adapted to rural and semi-industrial territories, where several small CO₂ sources could progressively be connected to nearby storage opportunities.

The first phase has focused on the geological and technical assessment of possible storage configurations in Lorraine, including subsurface screening, reservoir and seal evaluation, 3D geological understanding, and preliminary consideration of injection and monitoring principles.

The opportunity now is to move from study phase to pilot phase. This would involve selecting one or more representative methanisation sites, confirming the local geological storage potential, designing a small-scale CO₂ injection and monitoring scheme, and building the regulatory, technical and economic framework for a first territorial bio-CO₂ storage demonstrator.

The project is intended to contribute to durable carbon removal by returning biogenic CO₂ to the subsurface, while supporting the development of biomethane, local circular carbon management and Geological Net Zero strategies. Partners are sought to finance, co-develop and support the pilot phase, including industrial partners, public institutions, investors, CO₂ logistics and monitoring specialists, and local territorial stakeholders.
