Welcome to the R&DMAP - Energy - Underground Hydrogen storage platform

Two aligned Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) funding opportunities are being developed, this will cover 2 competitions Collaborative R&D and Development studies.

UHS Collaborative R&D competition seeks to fund an integrated, multidisciplinary programme addressing the development and validation of critical technologies required for safe, reliable and cost-effective underground hydrogen storage. Key themes include materials, compressors, metering and monitoring, together with cross-cutting activities such as supply chain considerations, representative testing, validation, certification and standards.

UHS Project Development Studies competition expects to support multiple projects developing credible UHS demonstrator opportunities towards commercially credible, materially de-risked and investment-ready propositions. Projects are expected to target initial MWh-scale deployment by 2030 and demonstrate a credible pathway towards commercial GWh-scale deployment by 2035.

The opportunities form part of UKRI’s £28 million Ultra-Long Duration Energy Storage Challenge, launched on 20 August 2026, which aims to accelerate technologies capable of supplying clean electricity for 100 hours or more. Underground hydrogen storage is one of the Challenge’s two main areas of focus, alongside new electrochemical storage technologies.

How can you use this platform?

Collaborate with others and find partners: The platform offers a great opportunity to collaborate with others in your field or industry. Participants can meet potential partners, collaborators, or even competitors and share ideas and insights.

Gain visibility for your organisation: Create an "organisation page" so that others in the community can see what you have to offer and can get in touch.
