The University of Dodoma

The University of Dodoma (UDOM) is a public university in Tanzania, formally established in March 2007 following the signing of the University Charter by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania. Conceived as part of the Tanzanian government's plan to relocate key institutions to the capital, UDOM was designed from the outset as a large, comprehensive institution capable of meeting the country's growing demand for higher education. In the years since its founding, it has grown into one of the fastest-growing universities in East and Southern Africa, offering demand-driven, quality education across a wide range of disciplines.

UDOM is organized as a collegiate university, structured around six colleges, three schools, and two institutes. These include the College of Business and Economics, College of Earth Sciences and Engineering, College of Education, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Informatics and Virtual Education, and College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, alongside the School of Law, School of Medicine and Dentistry, and School of Nursing and Public Health. The university also hosts the Institute of Development Studies and a Confucius Institute, reflecting its growing international academic partnerships. This structure allows UDOM to offer an extensive portfolio of academic programmes—around 145 in total—spanning diplomas, undergraduate degrees, postgraduate diplomas, master's degrees, and PhDs in fields ranging from engineering, medicine, and computer science to law, linguistics, and natural resource management.

Geographically, the university is located about 8 km east of Dodoma's city centre, in the heart of Tanzania's capital. Its central location makes it accessible to students from across the country and positions it well to serve government and private-sector employees based in Dodoma who wish to combine work with study. The climate and setting of Dodoma also make UDOM an attractive destination for international students.

As of the 2022–2023 academic year, UDOM had grown to serve more than 32,900 undergraduate students and over 1,800 postgraduate students, supported by a workforce of approximately 1,500 employees. The university places strong emphasis on research, publication, and community outreach, maintaining its own academic journals, hosting scientific conferences, and pursuing collaborative research and consultancy projects both locally and internationally. Guided by its motto, "Embracing Knowledge," UDOM continues to expand its role as a centre of excellence for teaching, research, and public service in Tanzania and the wider region.
