About me

I am Professor of Philosophy at the University of Glasgow and founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience. My research lies at the intersection of philosophy of mind, perception, and psychology, with a focus on sensory experience and consciousness — including illusion and hallucination, imagination, memory, dreaming, colour, and the relationships between perception and other mental states.

My work is strongly interdisciplinary, involving collaborations with scientists, artists, and scholars across fields. I am currently involved in several major collaborative projects on the foundations of perception and sensory engineering, and I welcome postdoctoral researchers whose work combines philosophical analysis with empirical or cross-disciplinary approaches.

Beyond Glasgow, I am President of the British Philosophical Association, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a Member of Academia Europaea. I also serve on the editorial boards of The Philosophical Quarterly and Philosophy and the Mind Sciences.

Working with me means joining a vibrant research environment. The Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience hosts an international network of collaborators, with regular workshops, seminars, and visiting scholars. I am committed to supporting postdoctoral researchers in developing ambitious research programmes and building strong academic careers.
