UCD is one of Europe's leading research-intensive universities; an environment where undergraduate education, masters and PhD training, research, innovation, and community engagement form a dynamic spectrum of activity. Since its foundation, the University has made a unique contribution to the creation of modern Ireland, based on successful engagement with Irish society on every level and across every sphere of activity. The international standing of UCD has grown in recent years; it is currently ranked within the top 1% of higher education institutions worldwide. UCD is also Ireland's most globally engaged university with over 38,000 students drawn from 152 countries, including over 5,000 students based at locations outside of Ireland.
I am an Assistant Professor of Social Policy at University College Dublin (UCD) and the Director of Graduate Studies for the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice. A former UCD Ad Astra Fellow at UCD, Departmental Lecturer at the University of Oxford, and researcher on FP7 funded project on socio-economic household resilience, I bring international experience to doctoral supervision and network training.
My research lies at the intersection of political economy, social policy, and critical resilience studies. I specifically investigate how welfare states and citizens construct and respond to "crisis," with a focus on social cohesion, social citizenship, and the politics of welfare in Europe and the UK. My work bridges theoretical depth with policy impact; I recently finished a project on "Just Resilience" for the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) and have previously provided expert evidence to the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) on pension reform, the UK Cabinet Office on the social impacts of Covid, the British Academy on Social Cohesion, and the European Commission on the accessibility of essential services as per principle 20 of the EPSR.
Supervision & Mentorship As Director of Graduate Studies, I am deeply committed to researcher development. I have successfully supervised three doctoral students to completion (including Ad Astra and Oxford DPhil scholars) and have experience as an Expert Assessor for the MSCA Doctoral Networks programme, giving me unique insight into the requirements of successful MSCA training.
I am keen to join Doctoral Networks focusing on:
The political economy of the welfare state.
Critical approaches to social resilience and "Just Resilience."
Social citizenship and cohesion in post-crisis Europe.
Interpretive and critical policy analysis methodologies.
Beyond these foci, I am happy to discuss other DNs that may fall within my areas of expertise.
