I am Samuel Ohikhena AGELE, Professor of Plant Physiology & Ecology, Department of Crop, Soil & Pest Management, The Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria.
I hold B. Agriculture, M.Sc (Desert Science), PhD (Crop Physiology) and Postgraduate Certificate in Protected Crops & Irrigation. I have successfully supervised a number of Undergraduate Students’ Projects, over 30 Masters’ and 16 PhD Theses till date.
I have over the years conducted research and taught courses at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Levels including: Bioclimatology and Plant Geography, Agricultural Climatology, Plant Physiology, Ecology, Farming Systems, Soil/Land Water Management, Soil and Plant Analysis, Soil Plant Relations, Soil Physics, Agroclimatology and Plant Physiology.
I have actively participated in administrative activities of the Department, School and the University and had served in various Departmental, School and University Committees. I was Head of Department, Crop, Soil & Pest Management, FUTA (2013-2016), Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Africa, Toru Orua, Bayelsa state (2017-2019), a Scholar, World Bank Step B Sponsored Centre of Excellence in Food Security and EU-AU Project (Capacity4Food Project) Centre of Excellence for Integrated Soil Fertility Management, FUTA, and Coordinator, West African Agriculture Productivity Programme (WAAP), FUTA.
Research interests and Specialization: I have strong background with respect to Plants in Relations to the Environment: Plant Physiology and Ecology (Ecophysiology of Plants), Agricultural Climatology, Plant physiology, Soil-Plant_Environment Relations, Agricultural water management, Protected/Controlled Environment Agriculture, Global change, Conservation agriculture, Ecological restoration (bioreclamation), Plant domestication/propagation of rare (medicinal) plants.
I have considerable experience for individual and multi-disciplinary PROBLEM-ORIENTED/NEED-DRIVEN Research and Project: design, implementation and monitoring in Agriculture, Food security, climate change and weather variability & allied researches at both national and international levels, including World Bank Step B Projects, EU Edulink Projects, West African Agriculture Productivity Programme (WAAP) and TETFUND.
I am a member of several professional/scientific associations including International Horticultural Science Society (HIS), International Soil Conservation Organization, International and African Crop Science Society, Soil Science Society of Nigeria, Agricultural Society of Nigeria, International Society for Irrigation and Drainage, and Urban Climate.
