My area of expertise is the experimental study of magmatic processes and the application to understanding Cenozoic volcanism in the French Massif Central.
The Laboratoire Magmas & Volcans (Magmas and Volcanoes Laboratory or LMV) is a joint research unit of Clermont Auvergne University (UCA), the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), and the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD). It has more than 140 members and specializes in volcano system science, from deep processes within the Earth's mantle to volcanic eruptions, and the formation and evolution of the Earth. The LMV is structured into three research teams (volcanology, petrology, and geochemistry) that have access to high-performance instruments for observation, experimentation (particularly high-pressure/high-temperature experimentation), and the chemical and physical characterization of rocks, minerals and glasses.
I am a senior researcher (director of research @ CNRS) based in Laboratoire Magmas & Volcans, Clermont Auvergne University, Clermont-Ferrand, France. My area of expertise is experimental petrology (piston-cylinder, gas pressure vessels) applied to the study of magmatic processes : magma ascent ; melting of the Earth's mantle and basalt generation ; physics of melt extraction from partially molten rocks. Over the past ten years, I have sought to strengthen the link between the experimental approach and applications to natural systems: to this end, I have chosen to work on the recent volcanic provinces of the French Massif Central.
