Prof Xiaodong Liu and his Intelligence-Driven IoT and Smart Systems Research Group have won a number of grants from HE, H2020, FP7 and UK Research Councils.
We are an international leading research group in IoT, pervasive systems, Cyber-Physical Systems, generative AI and intelligence-driven software engineering. Edinburgh Napier University is one of the largest higher education institutions in the UK with over 20,000 students from 109 countries. The research in its School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment (SCEBE) is recognised as world or international leading in UK’s Research Assessment (REF2021 and REF2014). SCEBE has significant collaborations on pervasive computing (IoT), AI, and data science. It helps to explore not just the technology but how people interact with it and how it impacts on society. SCEBE has led and participated in many projects with EU (including MSCA PF and MSCA DN), UK research councils, international funders and clients across all industry sectors. SCEBE has registered dozens of patents and spun out 10+ companies. It has a distinguished record in training researchers: a vibrant PhD programme, a number of CPD and Postdoc training programmes.

Prof Xiaodong Liu has been very active in the research in AI-driven software engineering, focusing on pervasive systems (Internet of Things), service-oriented architecture, evolution of cloud services, and intelligence-driven smart systems. He has won 15 external grants and successfully led or leading these externally funded projects with the role of principal investigator with a total value of over 2 million GBPs to his university (including MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships and MSCA Doctoral Networks projects). Currently Prof Liu leads the Intelligence-Driven Software Engineering Research Group. He is the founder a spin out company, FlexiCAGE Ltd. He has published 190 papers in refereed international journals and conferences and 5 book chapters. He is the inventor of 1 patent in Generative Component Adaptation registered in UK, USA and at International Level (PCT). He has been the chair, co-chair or PC member of a number of IEEE and ACM International Conferences. He is the associate editor of 2 international journals and the editorial board member of 3 international journals. He is the guest editor of 5 journal special issues, and the chief editor of 3 IGI Global Research Handbooks. He is the regular reviewer of other 6 international journals. He is a senior member of IEEE Computer Society, and a member of British Computer Society.
