The Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) is a research unit of Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa (ibb.tecnico.ulisboa.pt), dedicated to advancing knowledge at the interface of biology, chemistry, and engineering. Our mission is to develop innovative solutions for the health, agri-food, marine, industrial, and environmental sectors.
At iBB, we value collaboration and actively foster partnerships to co-create impact-driven research with tangible benefits for society.
Our multidisciplinary team is organized into five research groups spanning Bioengineering, Biological Sciences, Bioeconomy and Catalysis, Stem Cell Engineering, and Biospectroscopy and Interface Research. Together, we contribute to key areas such as:
Biosynthesis, sustainable bioprocesses, and downstream processing of biobased chemicals and biopharmaceuticals., Screening of microbial strains and enzymes for the production of value-added compounds—such as biosurfactants and carbon-based building blocks—from agro-forest-food residues, aquatic resources, and wastewater sidestreams., Bio-based production of polyesters and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) using marine and agrifood feedstocks., Development and maintenance of an in-house microbial library, comprising marine and terrestrial strains with biotechnological potential.
As Science Manager at iBB - an R&D unit at Instituto Superior Técnico focused on Health and Bioeconomy - I scout international funding opportunities and support researchers throughout the entire process of preparing competitive proposals
