About

Professor Joao Coelho, from Department of Física de la Materia Condensada, Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales at the University of Seville, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) in 2026 at this University. Please note that applicants must comply with the Mobility Rule.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group

Dr. João Coelho is an EMERGIA Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Seville and ICMS (US-CSIC), where he leads research on sustainable flexible energy storage. He earned his PhD from Trinity College Dublin (2016) specializing in 2D material electrodes, followed by a tenure focused on printed supercapacitors. In 2020, he joined Universidade NOVA de Lisboa under an FCT grant, pioneering laser-induced graphene on paper. Since 2023, he is a member of the Materials for Energy and Sustainability (MatES) Laboratory, which is dedicated to addressing the global challenges of the 21st century through advanced materials science. Our Research Areas Include: •        Eco-Efficient Synthesis: Development of low-impact synthetic pathways and bio-inspired material processing. •   Next-Gen Energy Storage: reducing critical raw materials in battery chemistries and enhancing energy density. •     Environmental Remediation: Design of porous and active materials for the capture and degradation of environmental pollutants. •      Advanced Characterization: In-situ and operando studies to elucidate structure-property relationships. Project description

This project centers on developing sustainable synthesis routes for nanomaterials (such as MXenes and graphene) to power the next generation of advanced energy storage systems. Our research focuses on bridging the gap between fundamental materials science and scalable, eco-friendly device integration. The core research objectives are: (i) Green Synthesis: identifying sustainable solvents and methods for the high-yield exfoliation of 2D materials; (ii) Sustainable Substrates: reducing electronic waste by integrating functional materials with biodegradable substrates like paper and textiles; (iii) Advanced Manufacturing: utilizing additive techniques—specifically Direct Ink Writing (DIW) and Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG)—to develop low-cost, complex energy architectures; (iv) IoT & Energy Harvesting: advancing thin-film device physics for IoT applications and achieving seamless integration with energy-harvesting modules.  While our current work prioritizes 2D nanomaterial-based flexible supercapacitors and emerging chemistries like zinc-ion devices, our scope remains flexible. We welcome expertise and collaborations across the broader spectrum of printed electronics and sustainable energy applications.
