Sustainable Intelligent Circular Pavements for Net-Zero and Climate Resilience

Ahmed Abed

Lecturer at Aston University

Birmingham, United Kingdom

About

Sustainable Intelligent Circular Pavements for Net-Zero and Climate Resilience aims to develop the next generation of road infrastructure that combines sustainability, circular economy principles, climate resilience, and intelligent monitoring. The project focuses on advanced pavement materials, geotechnical design, and performance evaluation, leveraging fiber-optic sensing, data interpretation, and predictive modelling utilising Machine Learning to monitor pavement behaviour and inform optimised maintenance strategies. By incorporating recycled and low-carbon materials, the project seeks to reduce environmental impact while delivering durable, high-performance pavements capable of withstanding climate extremes and traffic stresses.

A multi-partner European consortium will bring together academic institutions and industrial partners to ensure cross-sector innovation and knowledge exchange. The program includes structured doctoral training, providing early-stage researchers with expertise in pavement engineering, sustainable materials, geotechnics, data-driven performance assessment, and project management.

PhD candidates will engage in international secondments, gaining hands-on experience in both academia and industry, while contributing to circular, net-zero, and climate-resilient pavement solutions. Through this integrated approach, the project will deliver scientific excellence, practical innovation, and high-impact training, preparing the next generation of researchers to address the global challenges of sustainable and resilient road infrastructure.
