Integrating Nature-Based Solutions and Scenography for Climate-Resilient Rural Landscapes

Faris Karahan

Head of Department Landscape Architecture, Full Time Professor at Atatürk University

Erzurum, Türkiye

About

This PhD project aims to integrate nature-based solutions (NbS) with scenographic design approaches to develop innovative strategies for creating climate-resilient, culturally rich rural landscapes. By combining ecological, aesthetic, and social dimensions, the research will generate models that support sustainable rural development while enhancing local identity and community well-being.

The project is grounded in an interdisciplinary framework, bringing together landscape ecology, landscape architecture, scenography, and participatory rural planning. The doctoral researcher will gain expertise in NbS applications, spatial analysis, landscape narrative design, and stakeholder engagement. This integrated approach will equip the researcher with the knowledge and skills to address complex rural challenges, aligning with European priorities for green transition and climate adaptation.

Mobility and Collaboration are central to the project’s design. The researcher will engage in placements across academic, public, and private sector partners in Europe, ensuring exposure to diverse working cultures and building a strong professional network.

The training programme includes advanced technical modules on GIS, UAV, and AR applications in landscape analysis, scenographic design methods, research ethics, and open science practices. The project will also emphasise transferable skills such as project management, academic writing, and science communication, supporting the researcher’s long-term career development.

Impact will be achieved by producing practical planning and design frameworks that enhance rural climate resilience, conserve biodiversity, and strengthen cultural tourism. Results will inform local and regional policies and provide replicable models for other rural regions.

Ethics and Gender Dimension are embedded throughout the project. Inclusive and culturally sensitive participatory methods will be used to ensure equitable involvement of local communities. The supervisory team will reflect gender balance, and research outputs will incorporate gender-responsive perspectives where relevant.

The project will be implemented through structured secondments, interdisciplinary supervision, and a well-defined work plan aligned with doctoral training and research excellence standards. Overall, it will contribute to developing a new generation of researchers capable of bridging ecological science, design innovation, and social engagement for sustainable rural futures.
