About

This project focuses on the development and implementation of innovative biotechnological strategies to mitigate the spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms. By utilizing Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT), we aim to create self-disinfecting surfaces that are continuously activated by standard visible light. Unlike traditional chemical disinfectants, this technology offers a non-toxic, sustainable approach that prevents the selection of resistant strains. The research encompasses the molecular characterization of pathogens and the optimization of natural photosensitizers integrated into surface materials. Backed by the European Commission's Seal of Excellence and major Brazilian research grants (FAPERGS), this initiative aims to bridge the gap between molecular microbiology and practical industrial applications to enhance public health safety.
