Research projects in soft matter

Martin Buzza

Reader in Theoretical and Computational Soft Matter Physics at University of Hull

Hull, United Kingdom

About

I am interested to collaborate on any topic in colloid and interface science, colloidal self-assembly, inverse material design, topological soft matter, wetting and drying of liquid droplets or active matter. My expertise is in theoretical and computational soft matter physics and I have extensive experience in using particle-based simulations and other coarse-grained theoretical methods to study the thermodynamics, self-assembly and rheology of soft matter systems. I have a strong track record of leading multi-disciplinary teams through EU and UK grants and I collaborate extensively internationally. I have organised successful international conferences on soft matter and I am an active citizen in the UK soft matter community, serving on the committees of the Institute of Physics Groups in Liquids and Complex Fluids and Polymer Physics. I have supervised 3 postdoctoral researchers and 9 PhD students and am therefore well positioned to support the scientific and career development of ECRs and help broaden their international research networks.

The School of Digital and Physical Sciences has a strong international reputation for research, with 96% of physics research judged to be internationally leading or excellent at the last Research Excellent Framework (REF, the UK’s national assessment exercise of university research). The University of Hull hosts a 5000-core supercomputer (Viper) and has committed to upgrading this facility and providing ongoing technical support for end users. The School and University thus provide a world-class training environment for ECRs in research.

Qualified applicants must have a PhD in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Experience in simulation and computer programming (C/C++, Python) is desirable. An interest in mathematics and physical sciences is required.
