About

The Department of Czech Studies in Olomouc is one of the oldest and top Czech studies institutions in the country. It offers bachelor's and master's degrees in Czech philology, including textology and editorial practice, with options for pedagogical qualifications. The department collaborates with leading researchers, engages in international projects, and organizes conferences shaping current literary and linguistic research. It publishes the peer-reviewed journal Bohemica Olomucensia and participates in international educational programs.

Supervisor:

Doc. Mgr. Erik Gilk, Ph.D., Associate professor of Czech literature and head of the Department of Czech Studies at Palacký University in Olomouc. He specializes in 20th and 21st century Czech prose, particularly the interwar and post-1989 periods. He has published studies on interwar literature, a monograph on Karel Poláček, and collaborates with the Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences. His research also focuses on the small-town literary setting in Central Europe and the evolution of the historical novel since 1945.

Preferred research topics:

  • The small-town literary setting in 20th-century prose

  • Historical fiction and counterfactual historical narrative

  • Artistic expressions of postmodernism

  • The interrelation of literary history and literary criticism

Candidate requirements:

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) for no longer than 8 years at submission (exceptions for career breaks)

  • Residency in the Czech Republic must not exceed 12 months within the past 3 years at submission

  • Expertise in literary history, narratology, literary topology, and genre studies

  • Ability to collaborate and adapt in communication and teamwork

  • Proposal of an original project, including methodology and objectives

  • Clear vision of the project's practical application and usefulness

  • Knowledge of the Czech language of at least B2 CEFR
