About

Hosting Research Group

Our research group investigates how financial systems and public policies can accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We analyse key flows, such as foreign direct investment, remittances, taxation and development assistance, to understand their impact on sustainable and inclusive development.

Grounded in the United Nations’ human development approach, our work focuses on expanding people’s real opportunities, particularly in developing countries. By placing individuals at the centre of economic decision-making, we aim to reduce global inequalities and promote fairer, more sustainable development pathways.

Joining our team means contributing to impactful, policy-oriented research on how global finance can better serve societies.

Research Project

This project explores how EU Official Development Assistance (ODA) shapes both irregular migration flows—such as asylum seekers, refugees, and economic migrants—and regular migration pathways. At a time when global aid is expected to decline and development cooperation is increasingly politicised, the European Union has a unique opportunity to lead with a value-based approach.

The project examines how EU cooperation can promote safe and orderly migration, foster co-development, and strengthen democratic governance in low- and middle-income countries, offering a credible alternative to more restrictive and politicised models of aid.

Using a mixed-methods design, the research combines advanced quantitative analysis with in-depth qualitative interviews to identify what works, what doesn’t, and how European development policies can more effectively address the root causes of migration while supporting sustainable and inclusive development.
