About
Hosting Research Group
The NEUROFAN Group (Neuropharmacology of addictions and degenerative disorders) has developed its translational research lines in addictions, focusing on the discovery of new biomarkers for addictive behavior and the cognitive impairment characteristic of drug abuse, such as alcohol. The group possesses all the necessary resources for the discovery of new targets and the preclinical development of pharmacological compounds, as demonstrated by the development of the MY10 compound for alcohol use disorders. It has participated in international consortia for the discovery of biomarker panels to differentiate between stages of cognitive impairment and various types of dementia (Nature Aging 2(11):1040-1053, 2022). Since 2021, it has been a member of the National Research Network on Addictions in Primary Care (RIAPAd) within the RICORs program of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), thus bridging the strong translational nature of its studies with clinical research.
Research Project Description
We aim to modulate the crosstalk between peripheral metainflammation associated with obesity and neuroinflammation/neurodegeneration, acting through small extracellular vesicles (sEV) as the primary vehicle of this communication. In peripheral tissues, as liver and adipose tissue, ECM remodelling linked to autophagy promotes secretion of sEV, whereas in the brain, perineuronal nets alterations contribute to the initiation and progression of neuroinflammation.
