looking for a MSCA doctoral candidate on magnetic materials
Senior Research Associate at Centre for Research and Technology-Hellas CERTH
Thessaloniki, Greece
About
MSCA PhD Position: MnZn ferrites for HF power converters & dimensional dependencies of their magnetic properties (MAGNIFY DC2)
The activities of the Laboratory of Inorganic Materials at CPERI/CERTH (est. 2001) are dedicated on the fundamental and applied research on advanced magnetic ceramic materials for power electronics, covering applications ranging from the automotive, telecommunications and shielding to space sectors. With a long experience in the conduction of bilateral industrial R&D contracts governed by global market trends, LIM leads the design and development of ceramic magnetic materials with dedicated powder technology, characterization and magnetic measurements equipment.https://www.cperi.certh.gr/lim/
This PhD project forms part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network “MAGNIFY-Advancing Energy Conversion Technologies: High-Frequency Magnetics in Modern Power Electronics” and seeks to evaluate the dimensional dependencies of the magnetic properties of developed MnZn ferrites for HF power converters, in order to predict the electromagnetic performance and validate the ferrites under dimensional scenarios and in real operating conditions.
The PhD candidate will develop MnZn ferrite materials at laboratory scale and according to several compositional and process protocols. Research is going to focus on chemical composition, processing, electromagnetic performance and microstructure in relation to core shape and size. Magneto-mechanical modelling and AI training will support the prediction of performance and validation in magnetic designs. Sustainability aspects, energy efficiency and environmental impacts are also going to be investigated.
International collaboration is central to this project. The candidate will undertake secondments to:
- INRiM (Italy) – Electromagnetic characterization, broadband measurements (months 18-20)
- TAU (Finland) – Preparation of parametric models, thermodynamic, multiscale and deep learning-based modelling of dimensional dependencies of magnetic properties in MnZn ferrites (months 24-26)
- BSH (Slovakia)- Development of application-oriented parametric models (months 29-30)

We are seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic and communicative researchers who holds a master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or related field, with outstanding academic achievements (top 5%).
· Knowledge on powder technologies is an asset.
· Skills in modelling, simulation and programming are welcome (e.g. MATLAB, Python, FE simulation software)
· You have good communication skills and are able to build a network.
· You have a critical and creative mindset, able to formulate your own research questions.
· Eager to work in a collaborative international environment.
· Applicants must have proficiency in English (speaking, listening and writing).
· Knowledge of Greek is not required (but encouraged!)
Note: If the selected candidate holds a Master’s degree from a non-EU institution, an English proficiency certificate, a legalized English translation, and an apostille of the diploma and transcripts will be required.
