About
Founded in 1404, the University of Torino (UniTo) is one of the largest Italian Universities, with over 81.000 students, 7% of which of non-Italian citizenship, around 4.500 employees (academic, administrative and technical staff), more than 1.500 Ph.D. students and more than 700 research fellows. Research and training are performed in 27 Departments, encompassing all scientific disciplines except engineering and architecture. The University activities are carried out in more than 100 venues in the whole Region, including 71 labs and infrastructures and 22 libraries with full access to the web, the Botanical Garden and a number of University Museums. In addition, it offers university accommodation, university canteens and well-situated sports facilities.
According to the ARWU Shanghai international ranking, in 2023 UniTo ranked as the 5th university in Italy and among the top 300 universities out of 1.200 worldwide. The NTU Taiwan ranking for 2023 sets UniTo at the 6th place in Italy and at the 179st place over the 500 top universities worldwide. UniTo is also 3th in Italy and 18nd over 600+ worldwide in the 2023 ranking by GreenMetrics, assessing the environmental and social sustainability of academic activities and infrastructures.
Today, the University of Torino offers over 160 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in almost every field of study involving about 5.300 international students (a.y. 2023-2024). A growing number of programs are taught in English, and Italian language tuition is available for incoming students. Doctoral school provides 65 doctoral programs.
As for internationalization, UniTo is involved in about 520 cooperation agreements with institutions all around the world (South America, Mediterranean countries, India and China, in addition to Europe), including joint educational programs at undergraduate and doctoral level. In addition, the University's Departments offer excellent opportunities for Italian and non-Italian academic staff. International and local funding programs, both public and private, support the University’s commitment to innovation and research.
UniTo manages roughly 500 research projects per year. The long record of participation of UniTo in the EU strategic research agenda results from 115 FP7 and 176 H2020 funded research projects. Under H2020, UniTo coordinated 40 projects and 13 ERC, out of which 3 Starting Grant, 8 Consolidator, 1 Advanced and 1 Synergy. UniTo took part in 42 Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions and 9 Research Infrastructures projects overall. In Horizon Europe, 122 projects have been financed so far: 43 of them are coordinated by UniTo and 12 have been funded under the Research Infrastructures programme. In Horizon Europe UniTo took part in 36 Marie Skłodowska Curie (24 MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship) actions and coordinated 16 ERCs, including 7 StG, 5 CoG, 2 PoC and 2 SyG.
UniTo is one of the ten EURAXESS Centres in Italy, it provides free and customized assistance to all mobile researchers and their families seeking advice on issues related to their relocation across borders.
UniTo is Core Partner of the EIT Food Knowledge and Innovation Community, being involved in 139 EIT Food-funded projects (2017-present), for about 7.9 million Euros requested, and is appointed since January 2022 as an Associated Partner of the EIT Health Knowledge and Innovation Community, involving the highest profile and mostly renown members from the European community of healthcare, biomedical research, higher education and health and biotech industry.
UniTo is also partner of UNITA - Universitas Montium, an alliance of six comprehensive research universities from five countries: Universidade Beira Interior - UBI Portugal, Université de Pau et de Pays de l'Adour, Universidad de Zaragoza - UNIZAR Spain, Université Savoie Mont Blanc - USMB France and Universitatea de Vest din Timișoara West - UVT Romania.
UniTo is extremely aware of its role in the local community and promotes knowledge transfer to industry through patent licensing and spin-offs, and engages publicly with science, respecting economic, social and environmental sustainability by developing a wide range of public engagement in research activities.
