IoT systems for improved efficiency in operations and freight transport
About
The project aims to develop an interoperable IoT system that enables seamless integration between different modes of transport through advanced digitalisation. By focusing on standardisation, data harmonisation and real-time information exchange, the project will facilitate smoother transitions between transport modes (road, rail, maritime, and inland waterways), thereby improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Inspired by the principles of the Physical Internet (PI), the project will promote modularity, openness and universal interconnectivity across transport and logistics networks. Project will implement digital solutions that bridge existing systems and infrastructures, using open standards and interoperable services to enable synchro-modal and efficient transport operations. By leveraging digital technologies such as IoT, and AI, the project will enhance transparency, traceability, and coordination throughout the supply chain. Demonstrators will take place in selected multimodal hubs, showcasing how PI-based, standardised solutions can optimise asset utilisation, reduce emissions, and support a smart and sustainable logistics ecosystem.
