About
The University of Hull is a public research university in Kingston upon Hull, a city in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was founded in 1927 as University College Hull. The main university campus is located in Hull and is home to the Hull York Medical School, a joint initiative with the University of York. Students are served by Hull University Union. The Immersive Design Lab is based within the School of Arts and Humanities, part of the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Education. It addresses multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary challenges through the application of immersive technologies—including virtual, augmented, and extended reality (VR, AR, XR)—alongside human-computer interaction (HCI), artificial intelligence (AI), and digital media. The Lab focuses on key areas such as cultural heritage and health-related challenges within the creative industries.
Located within the Media Hub, the Lab also engages in broader research and development activities, supporting innovation across the creative sector. This includes providing consultation and mentorship to incubate student-led projects into small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as supporting the growth of existing SMEs towards sustainable and future-facing enterprises.
