Preservation and transmission of endangered language and cultural heritage with emerging technologies
Professor, Director of IXLAB at IXLAB - Dresden University of Technology
Dresden, Germany
About
TU Dresden IXLAB conducts interdisciplinary research into the perceptual and cognitive foundations, technology and applications of immersive and intelligent systems. We have extensive experience with interdisciplinary collaboration, working with partners in psychology and therapy, museums and cultural heritage, AI and robotics, education and design. This includes a long record of art-science collaboration.
Our current interests lie in using emerging technologies for the safeguarding of endangered languages and culture, and for experimental museology and cultural education. Namely,
Language in Context - using immersive technologies for the in situ capture of endangered languages. How should we capture endangered languages and cultural practices so that they might be learned by future speakers?
The Augmented Museum - exploring the opportunities and challenges of digitisation. This includes the virtual re-contextualisation and re-assembly of fragments, designing the museum as a hybrid virtual/real complex, and using telepresence to bring museum collections into classrooms across the world.
The Experimental Museum - developing the museum as a site of artistic, scientific and social experimentation.
