(HORIZON-CL2-2027-01-DEMOCRACY-04) Addressing the impact of artificial intelligence, cyberviolence, and deepfakes on equality, democracy and inclusive societies

Over the past years, my research interest has also increasingly focused on the impact of Artificial Intelligence, the interaction between technology and institutional development, transparency, accountability and the functioning of the rule of law in contexts with weak institutions.

Currently, I am researching how Artificial Intelligence and automation interact with public decision-making processes, especially in countries characterized by limited administrative capacity, weak control mechanisms, and low levels of public trust. One of the projects I want to collaborate on in the frame of Addressing the impact of artificial intelligence, cyberviolence, and deepfakes on equality, democracy and inclusive societies (HORIZON-CL2-2027-01-DEMOCRACY-04) concerns the role of Artificial Intelligence in Strengthening the Rule of Law in Weak Institutional Settings.

The aim of my project-proposal is to analytically examine the interaction between the use of Artificial Intelligence in public decision-making processes and the effective implementation of the rule of law in contexts with weak democratic institutions. AI and the forms of automation are increasingly promoted as tools to improve the transparency and quality of public decision-making. However, little is yet known about the effectiveness of these technologies in concrete institutional settings, particularly in countries with limited administrative capacities and weak control mechanisms. By analyzing cases studies in Balkan countries, the project aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the conditions under which AI can support or constrain efforts to strengthen democracy and the rule of law.
