CIVIC-CLIMATE: Co-creating Democratic Citizenship through Education, Participation and Green Transition
Professor, senior researcher at Kaunas University of Technology
Kaunas, Lithuania
About
CIVIC-CLIMATE is a Research and Innovation Action that aims to transform how citizenship education is designed and delivered across Europe by integrating democratic participation, sustainability, and co-creation approaches. Building on previous work in climate citizenship and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), the project brings together universities, civil society, policymakers, and young people to co-create new models of education that foster active civic engagement. The project will develop a European Citizenship Competence Framework that integrates democratic, sustainability, and participation skills. Through co-creation labs, students and stakeholders will collaboratively redesign curricula and learning experiences, ensuring they are inclusive, relevant, and future-oriented. CIVIC-CLIMATE will also develop a digital participation platform to connect young people with decision-makers, enabling real-time dialogue and strengthening trust in democratic institutions. These approaches will be tested and validated through pilot actions across multiple European countries. By combining education system transformation with real participatory practices, the project aims to empower a new generation of engaged citizens capable of contributing to democratic life and the green transition.
