Generative AI in Digital Cultural Heritage
Professor, Director of IXLAB at IXLAB - Dresden University of Technology
Dresden, Germany
About
From image restoration and enhancements and AI "in-painting" and "out-painting" to fill in gaps, to tghe creation of 3D models from images and reconstruction of entire virtual places or structures from fragments, generative AI promises to radically transform both the digitisation of artefacts and the capture of intangible heritage. However, it produces new challenges regarding veridicality and truth. How will we clearly mark out what is "true" and what is "inferred"? This is particularly true when considering future researchers may only have access to the virtual copy of artefacts.
In this project we research and pilot methods for the adoption of generative AI in the digitisation of museum archives.
