Rheomode is an independent environmental arts, architecture and design-research practice based in Athens, with activities in London and Ikaria, led by Dr Jon Goodbun.
Rheomode works across architecture, environmental design, ecological research, arts and public engagement, with a particular interest in the relationships between climate, urban environments, materials, technologies and forms of collective life. Its work combines research-by-design with full-scale prototyping, environmental sensing, exhibitions, events, publications and collaborations with academic, scientific, municipal, cultural and community partners.
Current research focuses particularly on urban heat and air pollution, passive and low-energy cooling, environmental sensing, bio-based and porous materials, water systems and new forms of public climatic infrastructure. This includes Towers of Winds, an ongoing research and design programme in Athens exploring experimental evaporative cooling structures at architectural and urban scales. Full-scale prototypes have been developed and tested in Athens, alongside research into bamboo structures, textiles, porous ceramics, vegetation and environmental monitoring.
Rheomode is interested in contributing to interdisciplinary European research and demonstration projects addressing climate adaptation, thermal comfort, public space, ecological design, neighbourhood transformation and the New European Bauhaus. We are particularly interested in collaborations that bring architectural and artistic research into dialogue with climate and atmospheric science, engineering, environmental monitoring, municipalities and local communities.
For the 2026 NEB Facility calls, Rheomode is seeking partnerships and emerging consortia where its Athens-based research, design expertise and existing experimental work could contribute to research-by-design, prototyping, demonstrators and place-based urban climate adaptation.
