Humankind BV

Humankind is a social design and urban change studio that works at the intersection of city planning, citizen participation and research. Our focus is on creating healthier, more inclusive, and more sustainable urban environments by putting people at the center of transformation processes. We do this through Citizen Experience research, participatory design methods, and strategic visioning with municipalities, developers, and communities. The organization is based in Rotterdam, with a network that extends across Europe and the Global South. Our scope of work ranges from neighborhood-level initiatives—such as co-designing public spaces with residents, developing and implementing youth programs—to larger-scale city visions and strategic frameworks for governments. We are a small professional team, supported by a flexible pool of collaborators depending on project needs. Over the past years, Humankind has engaged hundreds of residents, learners, and stakeholders through workshops, pilots, and participatory research activities.
