About

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) is a research institute of the Swiss Confederation and part of the ETH Domain. WSL conducts interdisciplinary, solution-oriented research on forests, landscapes, biodiversity, natural hazards, and snow and ice, addressing major societal challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, land-use change and sustainable urbanisation.

A strength of WSL is connecting scientific research with practice, policy and society. Combining expertise from the natural, social and economic sciences, WSL works closely with public authorities, practitioners, communities and other societal actors to co-develop evidence-based approaches for sustainable and resilient landscapes and communities. Its research includes environmental governance, human–environment relationships, landscape development and monitoring, sustainable land and forest management, and the design and evaluation of participatory processes.
