About

FORMA URBIS Lab is a research group at the Lisbon School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa, focused on the study of urban morphology and morphogenesis, with particular emphasis on the Portuguese city.

The main goal of the Lab is to build the Morphological Atlas of the Portuguese City. To achieve this objective, the group develops and organises a rigorous database with high-quality information, providing a common material source for researchers and experts working on urban morphology and enabling the development and extension of research in this field.

The Lab promotes both collective and individual research on morphology and morphogenesis, addressing different dimensions of the production and transformation of the urban fabric. Its research interests include the processes through which urban fabrics are produced, their historical and spatial evolution, the characteristics and properties of urban forms and models, and the analysis of the city from the perspective of planning and management.

Through the Morphological Atlas, FORMA URBIS Lab contributes to a deeper understanding of how cities are structured, transformed, and managed over time. Its expertise can support comparative research across European cities, particularly projects concerned with neighbourhood transformation, urban regeneration, spatial planning, urban design, and the sustainable evolution of the built environment.

For the NEB Facility, FORMA URBIS Lab is particularly interested in joining interdisciplinary European consortia where knowledge of urban form and urban transformation can contribute to the understanding, assessment, and co-development of strategies for more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient neighbourhoods.

The Lab is open to research partnerships, pilot cases, comparative studies, and the integration of the Morphological Atlas methodology into European projects addressing the transformation of existing urban areas.
