About

Smart Shelter Foundation (SSF) is a Dutch-registered NGO with 20 years of research and expertise in resilient low-carbon natural-material construction systems based on vernacular knowledge. Our work sits at the intersection of multi-hazard resilience, climate adaptation, cultural identity and affordability — core themes of the New European Bauhaus.
Led by Martijn Schildkamp (MSc Architecture, PhD Engineering, 3× Horizon Europe MSCA Seal of Excellence), SSF specialises in seismic-safe earthen and stone construction, passive thermal comfort, LCA and whole-life carbon assessment, code development, academic workshops and international technology transfer across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
SSF is interested in Horizon Europe and NEB collaborations as a research, technical, demonstration, dissemination and sustainability assessment partner.
