About

SGS is the world’s leading Testing, Inspection and Certification company. SGS, as a large multinational, has a global presence and outreach, allowing to operate globally and access to different companies, academia and governmental entities due to its  robust network

In Portugal, SGS PT has set the Global Biosciences Center (GBC), an applied R&D center working close to the market to develop new products and services in the molecular and microbiology realm. GBC hosts a state-of-the-art  lab and a multidisciplinary team of highly skilled and passionate experts in molecular and microbiology.

Within SGS, GBC leads the molecular-based environmental services, namely: biodiversity assessments and monitoring through environmental DNA (eDNA), covering several matrixes- soil, air, water, surfaces-, to assess the impact of human interventions (both potentially negative or positive). We can offer full scan or specific species detection (e.g. invasive species, umbrella species, etc). We also offer soil microbiome analysis and chemical analysis to soil. Finally, we can conduct studies of microbial communities and of biological processes (e.g. microbiological corrosion, anaerobic digestion, bioremediation, bioleaching, ) to successfully exploit these processes to our benefit or to provide answers towards prevention and mitigation of the negative effects of microorganisms.
