The Global Building Data Initiative (GBDI) advances decision making power for industry leaders, policy makers, design professionals, and building owners. Our knowledge and tools help you make informed, impactful decisions for improving resource use, emissions, and whole life cycle performance of buildings.
Our Approach
Global cooperation & inclusion
We facilitate global cooperation for establishing life cycle data for diverse regions to create comprehensive global buildings datasets, with special attention for including partners in the Global South.
Open data & development
We trust in the power of open science and open data to help democratize climate action. Open-source development and coordinated, open data protocols drive GBDI’s technical ecosystem.
Customization & Scalability
We offer open interfaces, scalable infrastructures and custom integrations. With a focus on resource use and embodied emissions in building structure, our formats and platform support comprehensive whole building life cycle assessments.
More about us:
GBDI is implemented under the umbrella of GLOBE - The Global Consensus on Sustainability in the Built Environment.
The initiative is led by a team of researchers and experts in the field of sustainable construction materials and whole life carbon benchmarking and policy support, from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), The Institute for Regenerative Spatial System Science (RISE) and the Universidade de São Paulo (USP).
We’re a global community dedicated to reducing resource use and emissions by improving the whole life cycle performance of buildings. Our members are experts on building materials and life cycle assessment of buildings, bringing in unique perspectives from research, industry and policy spaces.
By connecting key stakeholders and helping us all align our efforts we ensure the highest quality of support to our community.
Through global collaboration, open data and knowledge sharing we champion systems thinking for enabling sustainable building practices.
