Bolognetta was founded in approximately 1500 a.C. in the territory that was part of a noble fiefdom. The town’s first name was S. Maria dell'Ogliastro, because of an image of the Madonna placed in front of a wild olive tree, near a warehouse. Today approximately 4,200 people live in the town. The administration of the municipality is managed by an international mayor in Italy, Mary Elisabeth Smith from USA. This administration works toward implementing the principles of democracy, legality and meritocracy. Incoming budget sums in the 2024 were € 4.774.625,00, while outgoing expenses in 2023 were € 3.707.098,00 The municipality employs 4 workers with full-time contracts (36h weekly), 24 workers with part-time contracts (24h weekly) and 5 operators financed by the regional government. The administration also uses external consultants including two experts for public administration management, a tax expert, three engineers, two architects, a budget expert, and a strategic planning expert for territorial development and projects. Among the aims of the Municipal Administration is to strengthen the rapport between public government and its citizens, and create and improve upon an open door policy. The mayor and her aldermen administer the municipality with the aim of improving the quality of life of citizens, reducing taxes and bringing innovation to the community. The main objective is to offer concrete opportunities for orientation, training and job placement, through consolidated collaboration between all the public and private sectors and entities involved. The municipality has taken possession of assets confiscated from organized crime, such as the library, nursery school, and public offices, which will be returned to the community after renovation.
