Local Governance

Chair at Sustainable Communities Hulme

United Kingdom

About

Sustainable Communities Hulme has set democratic governance as a core principle of our operations. Our decisions are member led, and resident guided. There is an opportunity to support residents to develop their own planning authourity for Hulme.

This will switch the power dynamic from the residents making requests of the council and developers, to residents creating the rules for the council and developers.

We will be exploring and sharing the residential and institutional outcomes of the project, to assist with empowering further groups to have a greater democratic stake in how their neighbourhoods are developed.

These governance structures are primarily focused on adaptation to and mitigation of climate change.

We are looking for European Partners who have other models of local legal governance which have worked in effectively representing resident requirements at a local policy or development level.

This proposal will be updated and further detail added in future.
