Biofabrique Comfort
Project Leader - Design for Circular Economy at Wallonie Design
Belgium
About
The project will develop and test passive, affordable, and culturally rooted thermal comfort strategies by combining:
-
local bio-based materials with high hygrothermal performance
-
climate-responsive architectural design
-
ecosystem-informed material sourcing
-
participatory co-design with communities
-
neighbourhood-scale demonstrators in diverse European contexts
Instead of relying primarily on mechanical heating and cooling systems, Biofabrique Comfort explores how breathable envelopes, bio-based insulation, natural plasters, and locally sourced materials can stabilise indoor temperatures, regulate humidity, and improve air quality, while supporting local economies and reducing embodied carbon.
The project integrates technical innovation, social inclusion, and cultural identity, aligning with NEB values by delivering solutions that are:
-
Sustainable (low-carbon, regenerative materials)
-
Inclusive (co-designed with citizens and vulnerable groups)
-
Affordable (local value chains, passive strategies)
-
Beautiful (place-based, craft-informed architecture)
