Hydroxytyrosol or Seotonin production by cellular factories
Responsable Unidad Transferencia de Conocimiento at IATA-CSIC
Paterna (Valencia), Valencia, Spain
About
The biotechnological techniques currently used to produce hydroxytyrosol involve the addition of the tyrosine aminoacid in the culture medium. In the case of serotonin production, it is mainly carried out through a complex chemical synthesis using toxic solvents and catalysis. In recent years, new strategies based on microorganisms as cellular biofactories have been developed.
In the technology developed by the CSIC, these compounds occurs directly from glucose, so it lowers production costs and also allows to increase the yield of the process. Moreover, they are produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is considered a safe organism (GRAS).
On the other hand, the molecules are produced has a high degree of purity. And it is in that state when it has been proven that the antioxidant has more nutraceutical properties.
