Operational soil health monitoring in Mediterranean irrigated agriculture: sampling strategies, spatial variability and interpretation of soil indicators

Researcher at Center for Scientific and Technological Research of Extremadura (CICYTEX)

Lobón, Badajoz, Spain

About

CICYTEX (Centre for Scientific and Technological Research of Extremadura, Spain) is a public research institution focused on applied research and innovation in sustainable agriculture under real farming conditions. The institute works under the Regional Government of Extremadura and develops practical solutions to improve agricultural sustainability, productivity and environmental performance.

CICYTEX has more than 20 years of experience in soil, water and nutrient management in Mediterranean irrigated agriculture, with strong expertise in soil–plant interactions, agronomic monitoring and decision-support systems for sustainable crop management.

Within the scope of this topic, CICYTEX can contribute to strengthening the practical implementation of soil health monitoring systems, linking soil sampling, monitoring technologies and agronomic interpretation with real farming conditions.

The institute offers expertise in soil monitoring and sampling strategies, spatial variability assessment using proximal sensing technologies such as ECa mapping with the DUALEM-1S sensor, and integrated soil–plant diagnostics combining soil analyses and plant indicators.

CICYTEX also integrates laboratory data, field sensors, agronomic observations and satellite information to improve the interpretation of soil health indicators and support practical recommendations.

The institute collaborates closely with farmers, irrigation communities, cooperatives and agricultural advisors, enabling multi-actor approaches, on-farm trials and demonstration activities supporting soil monitoring and sustainable soil management.
