About

The Municipality of Almyros is a rural and coastal local authority in Central Greece with approximately 16.000 inhabitants. The municipality is characterised by intensive agricultural activity, industrial production and valuable natural, land and water resources, while facing increasing climate-related pressures such as droughts, heatwaves, floods and coastal risks.

Almyros plays a strategic role in regional development, agriculture, industry and tourism, contributing to food security and economic stability.

The European motorway E75, connecting Athens and Thessaloniki, crosses the municipality over a length of approximately 30 km, while the Nea Anchialos National Airport -of mixed civil and military use- is located within its boundaries, making Almyros an area of high infrastructural and strategic importance.

The municipality hosts two Natura 2000 protected areas:

Kouri Forest (GR1430002), the only remaining lowland oak forest in the Balkans, and
Mount Othrys (GR1430006), with a maximum elevation of 1.726 m.

These characteristics position the municipality as a relevant pilot territory for Horizon Europe Missions on Climate Adaptation and Soil Health.
