Live the MOYΣEION: experience the past of Matera and South of Italy in the Sassi of Matera

MOYSEION is not a traditional hotel in the Sassi of Matera, but rather a unique experience where you can physically and emotionally immerse yourself in the life of Matera and Southern Italy as it was in the past. It is a journey through time, bridging the present with the past, from the Late Neolithic period to the Magna Graecia era (VI millennium BC - III century BC).

The rooms and artifacts are recreated using experimental archaeological tecniques. Modern comforts such as sanitary facilities, memory foam mattresses, and air conditioning are included, though they are not part of the historical reconstruction. Electrical outlets are available, while the lighting has been carefully designed to evoke the atmosphere of the era being portrayed.

While ceramics and other artifacts are reproductions, the locations themselves are entirely authentic. It is well-documented that caves and hypogea in this region have been continuously inhabited from the Late Neolithic to the present day, making this place truly special—hence the name MOYSEION.

To live the MOYSEION we offer different rituals:

• Xenia Ritual, the welcoming ritual inspired by ancient Greek hospitality, takes place at check-in;

• Water Sanctuary Ritual, a narration of the ancient myth of Demeter and Persephone through music with ancient instruments and dance;

• Symposium Ritual, a convivial moment ispired by the ancient greek Symposium, where we offer wine, dried fruits, and local cheeses, all accompanied by music and dance;

• Morning Meal Ritual, our breakfast, inspired by the Magna Graecia culinary tradition and adapted to modern tastes.
