The University of Siena (Unisi) is a medium-sized, research-intensive institution in the Tuscan region of Italy, ranking 18th out of 64 Italian academic institutions in 2026. Its teaching and research span economics, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sciences, medical and surgical techniques, law, engineering and mathematical sciences, arts and humanities, and political sciences.

The Technology Transfer Office supports innovation protection, spin-off constitution and industrial partnerships. As of August 2026, Unisi has a patent portfolio of 148 patents organised into 39 families, 71% of which pertain to the healthcare sector. Similarly, 29% of the 34 spin-offs operate in the healthcare sector. Finally, as a third pillar of knowledge transfer and open innovation, joint laboratories are industry-centred partnerships focused on a common research goal. Of the 21 joint laboratories, 26% are in the healthcare sector.
