About
The Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences (BIOMETEC) promotes partnerships with companies to advance basic research and experimental development in the biomedical, biotechnological, pharmaceutical, and healthcare sectors. These collaborations aim to combine academic research excellence with industrial expertise to generate new scientific knowledge, explore innovative approaches, and develop technologies, products, and processes with potential scientific, technological, and clinical applications.
Activities include joint research programmes, collaborative experimental studies, contract research, proof-of-concept investigations, technology validation, and the development and optimization of innovative methods and platforms. Basic research collaborations focus on understanding biological mechanisms, identifying molecular targets and biomarkers, and investigating disease pathogenesis and treatment responses. Experimental development activities build on these findings to develop, test, and validate new diagnostic tools, therapeutic strategies, biotechnological products, medical devices, and laboratory technologies.
BIOMETEC provides multidisciplinary scientific expertise, specialized laboratory facilities, advanced analytical technologies, and research personnel to support companies throughout the research and development process. Collaboration may also involve joint applications for competitive national and international funding, researcher exchanges, access to scientific infrastructure, intellectual property management, and the dissemination and valorization of research outcomes.
Through these partnerships, BIOMETEC fosters knowledge exchange between academia and industry, strengthens companies’ research and innovation capabilities, and facilitates the progression from fundamental scientific discoveries to experimental validation and potential industrial applications. These activities contribute to technological advancement, the development of innovative solutions, and the strengthening of the biomedical and biotechnology ecosystem.
